2007 TWA Scholarship Recipient
Presentation of the 2007 Adam Van’t Hof College Scholarship
The family of Adam Van’t Hof and the Tonka United Soccer Association are proud to present the seventh annual Adam Van’t Hof Scholarship. This scholarship is given in memory of Adam Van’t Hof who died in May of 2000. Adam was a soccer player on Tonka United Premier and Classic teams, as well as a four-year Minnetonka High Soccer player.
A Tonka United panel of 3 people judged candidates and selected the recipient of the $1000 college scholarship.
This year’s Adam Van’t Hof Scholarship goes to Ian Newville, a 2007 graduate of Minnetonka High School. Ian’s accomplishments are outstanding:
• He overcame hearing and learning disabilities to become a fine student, a talented athlete, and a highly respected member of our community.
• Ian is active in school and church activities and provides special assistance to children with learning disabilities.
• On the field ,Ian is recognized by his teammates for his quickness and toughness, and for his excellent defensive abilities.
• Ian is also a true leader who energized his team through his actions and words of encouragement. As a result, Ian was elected captain of both his high school varsity soccer and track teams.
• Ian was also named All-conference soccer player his junior and senior years.
• Minnetonka teachers awarded Ian with the Student Recognition Award in both his junior and senior years.
• Ian achieved a 3.27 GPA at Minnetonka High School and is now attending Buena Vista University.
Ian’s determination, outstanding attitude and commitment, and remarkable work ethic make him an excellent recipient of the award. The Van’t Hof family and Tonka United are pleased to award the seventh annual Adam Van’t Hof Scholarship to Ian Newville.
2007 Cargill Award
On May 24, 2007, Cargill presented Gene Vant Hof, on behalf of the Adam Vant Hof Memorial Fund, a $1000 award ‘for outstanding community service to enhance the quality of life in communities where we live and work’. The award application noted the many causes the Fund supports: an annual $1000 college scholarship, as well as gifts to Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, Second Harvest, Emergency Food Shelf Network, Dragonfly Project, Pathways, and others.
At the same time, Gene was presented with a President’s Volunteer Service Award given in recognition of volunteers who donate over 500 hours per year, or 4000 hours over the course of their lives, to serve others at home or abroad. Gene’s work with Methodist Hospice, Olson Middle School e-mentoring program, Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, Quiet Remembrance, Adam Vant Hof Memorial Fund, and organizing the annual Cargill Food Drive was noted.
The Adam Vant Hof Memorial Fund gratefully appreciates your gifts. Be assured that the Fund utilizes 100% of your donations, plus much additional personal volunteer effort, for excellent causes in Adam’s name.

The 2006 recipient of the Adam Vant Hof Scholarship was Brett Sorteberg, a 2006 graduate of Minnetonka High School. Brett played soccer with Tonka United since age 5. He worked his way up to traveling teams by age 10 and continued playing through U18. Brett played whatever position the coach asked, always being among the hardest working and most determined. As a result, Brett was selected Most Valuable Player on several teams he played. Besides soccer, Brett also lettered in Cross-country and Track, and achieved the notable rank of Eagle Scout. Brett now attends Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. |
